Abstrak: 
The article portrays the relation between Malaya and Masjid al-Haram in Makkah in term of the development of Malay Muslim's and education. Historically, it has been proven that the establishment of pondok system and then madrasah was the direct impact of Malay Muslim. Ulama who had studied mostly in Masjid al-Haram such as Tok Kenali who has established the first pondok in Kelantan. Those who attended at pondok's education in Malaya at last will pursue their halaqah study at Masjid al-Haram. Therefore this article attempts to indicate directly the role played by Masjid al-Haram to the development of Malay intellectualism and education.

Abstrak: 
The traditional ulama and the Malays have always co-existed in the historical context of the Malay society. This was evident during the sultanate period up to the colonial period when the ulama became catalyst in education the Malays. The emergence of ulama reformist (Kaum Muda) who were inspired by the Islamic reformist in the Middle East university has challenged the traditional ulama in dominating the way of thinking. This article attempts to analyze the methods and approaches used in literatures by the traditional ulama that so call Kaum Tua with special reference to the work of Tuan Guru Haji Abu Bakar Palestin Hanafiah al-Qadhi (1908-1998).

Abstrak:
Islam and Malays are closely related. Some scholars in Malaysia more often name Malays as Muslims and vice versa. This is an indication of predominance of Islam in the Malay thought. The centre of the development Muslim thought is the ulama and it could be said that the essence of Malay thought is the ulama themselves. Efforts towards achieving the independence of Malaysia was initiated by them. For instance, the first Malay political parti, Hizb al-Muslimin was established by this group. After independence, the political parties, UMNO and PAS, become the backbone of Malay political activities involving also this group. This article examines the effect of their influence in the Malays political thought. Some related contemporary political issues will be highlighted.
